Youth in Music
Free Online Sessions
You will need:
A computer, tablet or phone (Android or iPhone) with a browser (e.g Microsoft Edge, Chrome)
An Internet connection
The App “Zoom” installed on your computer tablet or phone (free download from https://zoom.us/support/download
An email address
If you do not have access to any of the above and would like to participate, contact us at youthinmusic@legatus.sa.gov.au and we will attempt to support other arrangements.
Session 1
Introduction to the Music Business
Date: Tue 28 July at 7pm (duration: 1 hour)
Topics covered will include:
- What you can expect from these sessions
- What is a mentor, meet a mentor
- The Music Business then, now and what’s to come after COVID-19
- The basics: What is important
- How can you earn money from your music; APRA
- Writing good songs and playing shows are the foundation of any music career
Session 2
Song Writing Part 1
Date: Tue 4 August at 7pm (Duration: 1 hour)
Topics covered will include:
- How to start a song: themes, title, melody, rhythm, chords, instrumentation (guitar or piano)
- Tell a story to engage your listener
- Song structure; verse, chorus, middle – how to differentiate the parts to build tension and emotion
Session 3
Song Writing Part 2
Date: Tue 11 August at 7pm (Duration: 1 hour)
Topics covered will include:
- The song, the voice, the music
- Know your audience
- Develop your own voice
- Getting people to listen to your song
- Using Social Media and distribution platforms such as Spotify, iTunes, ReverbNation, Soundcloud
Session 4
Recording your song
Date: Tue 18 August at 7pm (Duration: 1 hour)
Topics covered will include:
- Why make a demo?
- Roles in the recording process; understanding who does what
- Recording at home; what you need, Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) explained: a good microphone is a song writer’s best friend
- What makes a good demo
- Tips on recording at home inexpensively
- Why professional demos can be a waste of money
Session 5
Using Social Media to promote your music
Date: Tue 25 August at 7pm (Duration: 1 hour)
Topics to be included include:
- Using Social Media: the good bits, the not-so-good bits
- Distribution platforms: Spotify, iTunes, ReverbNation, SoundCloud, Bandcamp + others
- Streaming: live streaming
- Using YouTube
Session 6
Finding your voice
Date: Tue 1 September at 7pm (Duration: 1 hour)
Topics to be included include:
- The song, the singer, the music
- The importance of being yourself
- The importance of the basics; know your stuff
- Instrument, including voice, skills
- Performance skills
Each of these Sessions will be hosted by a facilitator and feature guest experts on particular subjects.
Each session will be recorded and made available on the Youth in Music page
The final version of your song will be recorded on video for downloading through our website and Facebook Page
